Wednesday, December 25’s devotional. Psalm 98:5 invites us to, “Sing to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and melodious song.” This verse not only celebrates the joy of worship through music but also calls us to use instruments as a means of glorifying God. Mark Penrith explains, “The poet calls God’s people to use all kinds of instruments to praise God…till the accumulated praise causes the skies to echo in resounding praise.”
From the lyre of ancient times to the guitars and pianos of today, music has always played a vital role in worship. Mark emphasizes that Scripture repeatedly commands us to sing: “Psalm 33:3 says, ‘Sing a new song to Him; play skillfully on the strings, with a joyful shout.’” This command reminds us that music is not just an optional part of worship; it is integral to expressing our praise and adoration for God.
Corporate worship unites believers in one voice. Mark describes how “melodious song indicates many singers coming together with intent—a choir gathered to coronate God as the sovereign King.” Such unity in worship reflects the congregational principle from the Benoni Baptist Church’s beliefs: “Each member has the privilege and responsibility to use his/her gifts and abilities to participate fully in the life of the Church.”
Musical instruments also serve as an extension of this principle. “God gives His people talents to praise Him. Don’t waste yours,” Mark challenges. Whether you play an instrument or lift your voice in song, your worship contributes to the beauty of collective praise.
This call to worship through music also aligns with the church covenant: “We will strive to be consistent and regular in fellowship, corporate worship, prayer, and instruction of the whole counsel of God’s Word.” Music not only uplifts the soul but also connects us with the truths of Scripture and the shared hope of the gospel.
Today, let Psalm 98:5 inspire your worship. Select a favorite hymn or worship song and focus on its lyrics. Sing it as a heartfelt prayer, offering your praise to the Lord who reigns as King.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of music. May my worship through song and melody glorify You and unite me with Your people in joyful praise. Amen.
