We spend much of life looking at what is right in front of us. Meetings fill the calendar. School runs demand attention. Emails keep arriving. We wake up and repeat the cycle. Yet in Haggai 2, God lifts Zerubbabel’s eyes beyond the immediate. Mark Penrith reminds us that, “history itself was moving toward a greater Day.” The people had returned from exile. The temple work mattered. Their obedience mattered. But God wanted them to see something bigger. As Haggai 2:21 says, “I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.” God was not merely speaking about present circumstances. He was directing their gaze toward His future purposes.
The sermon reminds us that, “By His divine calendar, a Day of reckoning is inevitably coming.” We often live as though history drifts aimlessly forward. We act as though tomorrow simply arrives on its own. Yet Scripture gives a very different picture. The Lord rules over time itself. The sermon says, “History is heading towards a certain end.” God has fixed the destination. Christ will return. The Day is not uncertain. The Day is appointed.
That truth changes how we live ordinary days. The pressure of work can make everything feel urgent. Parenting can feel relentless. Financial burdens can sit heavily on our shoulders. Yet Mark says, “Today is not ultimate.” Your current workload is not ultimate. Your stress is not ultimate. Your difficult season is not ultimate. Jesus Christ is coming. That means your labour is not wasted. Your faithfulness is not unseen. Your obedience is not meaningless.
Before your workday begins today, pause for sixty seconds. Slow down. Remember the words of the sermon, “Christ is coming.” Lift your eyes beyond your inbox and responsibilities. Let eternity reshape today. Let future hope steady your present heart.
Around the supper table tonight, ask your children, “What are you looking forward to this week?” Then remind them that Christians look forward to something greater. Jesus is coming.
What changes when you remember that history is moving toward God’s appointed Day?
Prayer: Father, lift our eyes beyond today’s pressures and fix our hearts on Christ’s return. Help us live faithfully while we wait. Amen.
