The Procedure to Test – Part 2

Saturday, January 11’s devotional. The journey through 1 John 4 brings us to the heart of discernment, specifically the conduct and commitment tests, which are critical tools for identifying false teachers. John emphasizes the importance of examining both the teachings and the lifestyles of those who claim to speak for God. In 1 John 4:4-6, we see the contrast between the children of God and the false teachers: “You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

Tolamo shared an experience that vividly illustrates this need for discernment. Attending a service on his campus, he initially enjoyed the worship but soon felt unsettled by the sermon. It became clear that the preacher was a false teacher, spreading a gospel contrary to Scripture. Tolamo’s story highlights the necessity of the conduct and commitment tests in real-life situations, urging believers to carefully evaluate the teachings they encounter.

John teaches that a key aspect of discernment lies in observing the conduct of those who teach. False teachers often exhibit behaviors that align with worldly values rather than godly principles. As John states, “They are from the world, and therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them” (1 John 4:5). This worldly alignment serves as a red flag, revealing their true nature.

Jonathan Edwards reminds us, “True religion, in great part, consists in holy affections.” This ties directly to the conduct test, as true teachers will exhibit lives transformed by holy affections—demonstrating godliness, humility, and a commitment to Christ. Their lives will reflect the fruits of the Spirit, standing in stark contrast to the worldly and ungodly behavior of false teachers.

Heavenly Father, we come before You, seeking Your wisdom and guidance in discerning truth from falsehood. Help us to diligently test every teaching, aligning it with Your Word. Strengthen our commitment to follow You wholeheartedly and grant us the courage to stand firm against deception. May we grow in knowledge and holiness, bearing witness to Your truth in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.`
