Have you told Jesus about it?

(A reflection on “Go and tell Jesus” by Octavius Winslow.)

This question presses gently but firmly upon a weary soul. It reminds you to speak to a King whom you can call a brother and a friend. Your access to Him is not guarded by any bureaucracy. The so-called “earthly great ones” are often fenced off by barriers, titles, and distance. But Jesus stands open-hearted with His wounded arms and side. They are the doorway to the bosom of his loving heart. Even now, He invites the broken and burdened soul to come. Could this be you that he is inviting? You may feel too tired to pray. You may feel too confused to articulate your grief. Or, you may be feeling too ashamed to mention your failure or to appear to him with the garments of your many failings. Christ’s invitation remains unchanged. So go and tell Jesus. He knows your grief and sorrow. He is “a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief,” and therefore no sigh of yours is strange at His feet.

Are you battling with grief and loss?
Most of the time, we assume that we know Jesus until heartache flings us upon His sympathy. Then we discover a lot about Him. Not just in theory but in tears. That Jesus is a loving Friend. A sympathising Brother. He is the only refuge where lonely grief feels understood. What seemed like a loss becomes the divine means of making Christ precious to a grieving heart. God intends to sanctify you. And so removes your earthly idols. It’s never a joyful experience. But our grief becomes the doorway into a deeper fellowship with Christ. Tell Jesus about it. Tell Him, owning no other master but Jesus, seeking no other friend but Jesus, repairing to no other asylum but in Jesus. Speak to Him about it.

And what can you bring to Him?
Bring to Him everything. All your worries, all your sins, all your griefs. Bring it to Jesus. He has paid your debt. He has borne your curse. He has blotted out your sins. There is nothing left for you to do but to tell Him all and receive His comfort. Even the secret declensions of your heart, hidden from every human eye, lie open before Him, not to condemn you but to heal you. So my dear friend, discouraged saint, take this one step. Speak to Jesus about it. You will find in Him what others have found. A true Friend. A true Brother. A true Confidant and a great Savior who is able to save and comfort you. Mathew 11: 28, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”
