Jesus makes the goal of discipleship unmistakably clear. Matthew records His words, “teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.” In the sermon, Mark Penrith emphasised that point, saying, “The goal of teaching is not information. It is obedience.” Jesus does not commission His church to produce informed listeners. He commands us to shape lives that actively submit to His word.
This corrects a common drift. Knowledge feels productive. Attendance feels faithful. Yet Jesus presses further. Matthew 28:20 does not say teach them to know everything, but “to observe everything I have commanded you.” Mark explained it sharply, “Discipleship does not end in the water. It begins there.” Baptism marks a beginning. Teaching obedience sustains a lifetime of following Christ.
That obedience reaches into ordinary places. The home. The office. The quiet moments no one else sees. Mark said, “You are to teach the whole counsel of Christ. How to think. How to live. How to marry. How to work.” Jesus claims authority over speech, forgiveness, integrity, and patience. The gospel reshapes everyday decisions, not only Sunday routines. Christ’s commands press into the habits that form our lives.
This truth confronts busy men directly. It is possible to know Scripture well and still resist it quietly. We excuse ourselves with pressure, fatigue, or timing. Yet Jesus still commands obedience. Mark reminded us, “The next step is teaching. And the goal of teaching is not information. It is obedience.” Following Christ always moves from hearing to doing. Delayed obedience still counts as disobedience.
So choose one command you already know but avoid. Forgive someone who wounded you. Pray when distraction feels easier. Speak truth when silence feels safer. Take one concrete step today. Mark urged clarity when he said, “Your obedience is not a suggestion. It is your calling.” Small steps of obedience reshape hearts over time.
Do not overlook your children. Discipleship begins at home. Ask them a simple question tonight, What do you think Jesus wants us to obey this week. Let them see that following Christ shapes real choices. Mark said, “You are to teach them how to live lives subject to Him.” That teaching starts closest to you.
Where might knowledge be replacing obedience in your Christian life?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me not only to hear Your word, but to obey it. Show me where I resist You, and give me grace to follow You today. Amen.
