Paul explains why he writes so boldly to the Roman believers. He reminds them that his ministry comes from God’s grace. Scripture says, “Nevertheless, I have written to remind you more boldly on some points because of the grace given me by God, to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the gospel of God” (Romans 15:15–16). In his sermon, Mark Penrith draws attention to Paul’s remarkable description of his calling. Mark Penrith says, “He writes boldly. Why? Because of grace.” Paul knows that his ministry does not originate in personal ambition. It comes from the grace of God.
Paul describes himself as a priest who serves the gospel. His ministry is not merely teaching information. He sees himself presenting people to God. Scripture continues, “God’s purpose is that the Gentiles may be an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:16). Mark explains this imagery vividly. “His work is liturgical. His sanctuary is the nations. His offering is people.” The apostle proclaims Christ so that men and women might become a living offering to God. The gospel changes lives. It transforms sinners into people made holy by the Spirit.
This perspective reshapes how we view gospel ministry. Evangelism is not about winning arguments. It is about seeing people reconciled to God. Mark describes Paul’s calling in simple terms. “He is not merely teaching. He is officiating. He is presenting people to God.” The apostle proclaims Christ so that people may belong to the Lord. Every conversion becomes an offering of worship to God. The Holy Spirit does this work. The preacher proclaims the message, but God changes hearts.
This truth invites us into the same mission. God still gathers people to Himself through the gospel. Mark reminds us that “Paul operates as a priest of the gospel.” The church participates in that work whenever believers pray, speak about Christ, and point others toward Him. The gospel spreads through ordinary Christians who love others enough to pray for their salvation.
Choose one person today who does not know Christ. Write their name somewhere visible. Pray for them every day this week. Ask God to open their heart to the gospel. Ask Him to give you wisdom and courage when opportunities arise.
If you have children, pray together tonight. Ask each family member to name one friend or classmate who needs to hear about Jesus. Then pray for them together.
Who has God placed in your life that you can pray for and gently point toward Christ?
Lord, thank you for the grace of the gospel. Use us to point others to Jesus. Open hearts to believe, and make many lives an offering acceptable to you through the Holy Spirit. Amen.
