The King enters the city, and everything changes. Mark Penrith writes, “When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in an uproar.” Scripture records the question, “Who is this?” (Matthew 21:10). This is not curiosity alone. It is confusion. It is tension. The King stands before them, yet they do not recognise Him.
Mark makes it plain, “The word uproar means stirred. Shaken. Agitated.” This is not calm reflection. This is a city unsettled by truth. “The city that should have been waiting for her King does not even recognise Him.” They had the Scriptures. They had the promises. Yet when fulfilment stands in front of them, they hesitate. They question. They miss Him.
The crowd answers, but even their answer falls short. “The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee’” (Matthew 21:11). Mark notes, “It is not a denial. A prophet is still a messenger from God.” Yet it is not enough. “Their confession shrinks.” The King is reduced to something safer. Something more manageable. Less threatening.
This moment exposes a deeper reality. “Jesus arrives as the prophesied King, dividing people into praise or confusion.” There is no neutral ground. You either recognise Him rightly, or you redefine Him wrongly. You either bow in worship, or you linger in uncertainty. The question of the city still stands. It presses on you.
So answer it. Not vaguely. Not later. Today. Who is Jesus to you? Mark presses the weight, “The same question stands before you.” You cannot borrow someone else’s answer. Not your church. Not your family. Not your past. You must answer for yourself. In prayer. In words. In life.
Bring this into your home. “Ask your family directly: Who is Jesus?” Listen carefully. Do not assume. Lead the conversation. Shape their understanding. Help them see Him as He truly is. Not just a teacher. Not just a prophet. The King. The Saviour. The Lord.
Do not be like Jerusalem. “Confused. Stirred. But unchanged.” The King has come. He has gone to the cross. He has risen. He will return. This is not a small question. It is the question.
Will you respond to Jesus with full surrender or lingering confusion?
Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see You clearly. Lead me to trust You fully and follow You without hesitation. Amen.
