The Verdict: Guilty

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from David’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Dave’s sermon notes below.

Friday, December 6’s devotional. Romans 3:19-20 delivers a sobering conclusion: “Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are subject to the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment. For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law” (CSB). These verses confront us with the reality of our guilt before God. David Somerset emphasized that “the law was never intended to justify us; it condemns us by revealing the depth of our sin.”

The law functions as a mirror, reflecting our inability to meet God’s perfect standard. Dave explained, “When we hold our lives and conduct up to God’s holy law, we gain personal, meaningful knowledge of our sin.” This knowledge leaves humanity defenseless before a holy God. Unlike the legal systems of this world, where innocence is presumed until guilt is proven, Paul declares that “we are sinful and incapable of righteousness, guilty until proven innocent.”

The law’s purpose is to expose our helplessness, not to provide a means of salvation. Dave highlighted this by stating, “Our works, no matter what merit we think they deserve, can never measure up to the standard set out in the law.” This echoes the Benoni Baptist Church’s belief in “the knowledge of sin through the law.” The church recognizes that salvation is not earned but granted through God’s grace.

This reality underscores our desperate need for a Savior. As the church covenant declares, believers rely on “the perpetual grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Our justification comes through faith in Christ, not through our efforts. This truth offers hope amidst the despair of our sinfulness. Paul’s verdict of “guilty” points us to the ultimate solution—God’s grace extended through Jesus.

Take time today to reflect on your inability to earn righteousness. Recognize that the law’s judgment, while humbling, also directs us to God’s grace. In Christ, we find the justification we cannot achieve on our own. Romans 8:1 reassures us: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus” (CSB).

Prayer: Lord, I thank You for the grace that justifies me through faith in Jesus. I acknowledge my guilt and helplessness apart from You. Help me to rest in Your finished work. Amen.
