God’s Sovereign Call to Rebuild

Tuesday, December 31’s devotional. “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion; shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9, CSB). These words from the prophet Zechariah call us to recognize the hope found in God’s sovereign plan. As Andre emphasized, this was not merely a call to rebuild the walls and temple of Jerusalem but an invitation to rebuild lives in obedience to God’s purposes. God calls, enables, and strengthens us—not because of who we are, but because of who He is.

The returning exiles faced overwhelming discouragement. The city lay in ruins, and resources were scarce. Yet, God assured them through Zechariah’s visions: “I brought you back. I am God. I am the Sovereign, and I will provide, protect, and enable you.” This truth applies to us today. Whether it’s broken relationships, weakened faith, or life’s disappointments, God calls us to rebuild with the confidence that He empowers us for the task.

Zechariah’s prophecy of the coming King riding on a donkey directs our hearts to Jesus, who fulfilled this on Palm Sunday. His humble yet victorious entry reminds us of God’s ultimate restoration plan. Andre drew a powerful connection: “Everything that was lost will be restored.” This hope inspires perseverance amid life’s struggles. Just as the exiles looked forward to a new temple, we anticipate the New Jerusalem—a time when all brokenness will be mended, and joy will be eternal.

John Bunyan aptly wrote, “The Christian life is a journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City.” Along this journey, we may face trials, but God’s Spirit within us strengthens us for the work ahead. Benoni Baptist Church’s covenant emphasizes living by the Spirit, acknowledging that “no man is capable in himself to fulfill the promises made.” This reliance on God’s power aligns with the message of Zechariah: rebuild not by human effort but through divine strength.

Let us pray:
Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness. When life feels overwhelming, help us to remember that You provide, protect, and empower us. Teach us to trust in Your strength as we rebuild areas of brokenness in our lives. Fix our eyes on the hope of Your eternal kingdom and guide us to live each day for Your glory. Amen.
