Walking in Abraham’s Footsteps

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Mark’s sermon notes below.

Thursday, January 23’s devotional. Romans 4:12 declares, “And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.” This verse invites us to reflect on the inclusiveness of God’s promise, which extends to all who follow Abraham’s example of faith. Abraham’s faith set the standard for both the circumcised and uncircumcised, showing that righteousness is accessible to all through faith.

Abraham’s story illustrates that God’s promise isn’t confined to a specific group or ritual. His faith was credited as righteousness before he was circumcised, making him “the father of all who believe,” regardless of their adherence to Jewish customs. This challenges the deeply ingrained historical perspective that rituals define one’s righteousness. Instead, it’s faith that truly matters.

The Baptist principle of “the church” reflects this inclusive vision, recognizing the church as “the whole company of those who have been redeemed by Jesus Christ.” This principle highlights that our unity as believers stems from faith in Christ, not from external rituals or traditions. The church covenant reinforces this by urging us to “walk together in brotherly love and unity,” a call that transcends cultural and religious boundaries.

Walking in Abraham’s footsteps means living by faith daily. It’s a call to trust in God’s promises, no matter our background or previous adherence to religious rituals. Mark stressed, “Faith, not works or rituals, is what God credits as righteousness.” This truth invites us all to examine our faith and ensure it’s rooted in a genuine relationship with God.

Today, consider how you can follow Abraham’s example. Are you walking by faith, trusting in God’s promises, and embracing the inclusiveness of His covenant? Remember, faith opens the door to righteousness and unity in Christ.

Prayer:
Lord, help us to walk daily in faith, following the example of Abraham. May we trust in Your promises and embrace the unity and inclusiveness of Your covenant. Amen.
