Walking in the Light – The Character of God

Thursday, March 6’s devotional. “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him.” (1 John 1:5). John, the beloved disciple, proclaims a profound truth—God is light. Light, in Scripture, symbolizes purity, holiness, and truth. In contrast, darkness represents sin, deception, and separation from God. Walking in fellowship with Him means aligning our lives with His light. As Robin said in his sermon, “The beautiful fellowship is only possible because God is light.” This truth is foundational to our relationship with Him and one another.

John’s emphasis is clear: if we claim to have fellowship with God yet continue in darkness, we deceive ourselves. Light and darkness cannot coexist. “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth” (1 John 1:6). This is not about occasional failures but about the pattern of our lives. As Robin pointed out, John’s concern is not just salvation but what happens after salvation—the beauty of ongoing fellowship with God. Walking in the light means confessing our sins, repenting, and seeking His transforming grace daily.

God’s light exposes what is hidden. Just as physical light reveals what is unseen in darkness, God’s holiness exposes the sin in our hearts. “If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Robin illustrated this by contrasting false fellowship with real communion with God: “The joy of the beautiful fellowship is possible because we are not alone.” Walking in God’s light is not only about personal holiness but also about authentic fellowship with other believers.

The principles of Benoni Baptist Church echo this call to holiness. As the church covenant states, “We will seek to live according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh, believing that God is holy and that those who seek to be called by His name must be holy too.” To walk in the light is to embrace this calling, surrendering every hidden part of our lives to God’s refining power. Are there areas in your life that need to be exposed to His light? Are there sins you need to confess? His light is not meant to shame us but to cleanse and restore us.

Father, You are light, and in You, there is no darkness at all. Thank You for calling us into fellowship with You through Jesus Christ. Search our hearts and expose anything that keeps us from walking in Your light. Help us to confess our sins and pursue holiness, that we may experience the beautiful fellowship You desire for us. Strengthen our bond with one another, that our joy may be complete in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
