Rejoicing in God No Matter What

Thursday, March 13’s devotional. Faith is not dependent on circumstances. Habakkuk’s journey from confusion to confidence in God reveals a deep truth: faith flourishes when we choose to rejoice in God, even when trials press in. As Habakkuk wrestled with God’s plan, he ultimately reached a place of worship, declaring, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will celebrate in the God of my salvation!” (Habakkuk 3:18). His transformation is remarkable—he moves from questioning to trust, from fear to faith, and from despair to joy.

Habakkuk remembered God’s past faithfulness, and this strengthened his resolve. He recounted the mighty acts of God—how He parted the seas, led His people to victory, and displayed His power over creation. These reflections fueled his trust. In times of hardship, we too must look back and remember God’s goodness. As Dave wisely said, “When you’re struggling to see what God is doing, look at what He has already done. His past faithfulness is the foundation for your future hope.”

Yet, Habakkuk’s declaration of faith is even more striking because he does not see immediate deliverance. He describes a barren land—no figs, no grapes, no crops, no livestock—yet still he rejoices. “Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines…yet I will celebrate in the Lord” (Habakkuk 3:17-18). This is not blind optimism but deep, abiding trust. His joy is not rooted in what he has but in who God is. True faith looks beyond the present struggles and sees the unshakable character of God.

How can we cultivate such faith? By choosing to rejoice even when life is difficult. Worship is an act of faith, an expression of trust that God is good even when our situation is not. We can take time to remember God’s past faithfulness, recount His blessings, and declare His promises. When we do this, our perspective shifts from our troubles to our Savior. Dave reminded us: “Faith is not about seeing; it’s about believing. And when we believe, we will rejoice.”

Lord, teach me to rejoice in You no matter what. When my circumstances are uncertain, remind me of Your unchanging nature. Help me to trust in Your goodness, to recall Your past faithfulness, and to worship You even in the waiting. Strengthen my faith so that I may say with Habakkuk, ‘Yet I will rejoice in the Lord.’ In Jesus’ name, Amen.
