Living by Faith in God’s Promises

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Stephan’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Stephan’s sermon notes below.

Thursday, April 3’s devotional. Walking by faith is not about seeing the whole picture—it’s about trusting the One who holds it all together. When the Israelites left Egypt, they carried something significant with them: the bones of Joseph. “Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear a solemn oath, saying, ‘God will certainly come to your aid; then you must take my bones with you from this place’” (Exodus 13:19). This act was not merely sentimental; it was a declaration of faith.

Stephan Museler emphasized, “Joseph had been dead for centuries, but his faith in God’s promise was still alive.” God had promised to bring His people into the land He swore to their ancestors, and Joseph believed it so firmly that he instructed his descendants to carry his remains into that land. “Even in death, Joseph bore witness to the certainty of God’s Word,” Stephan noted.

The Israelites’ journey was not a straight path, and neither is ours. “Sometimes, the way God leads us doesn’t make sense to us, but that doesn’t mean He’s not guiding us,” Stephan said. Faith is trusting that God’s promises remain true, even when circumstances seem uncertain. When we feel lost or discouraged, we must remember what God has said and cling to it.

The faith of those who came before us should inspire our own. Joseph’s bones served as a physical reminder of God’s covenant, just as Scripture serves as our constant reminder today. “When God says He will do something, He does it—our job is to trust and walk forward in faith,” Stephan explained. Faith doesn’t demand immediate results; it patiently waits for the fulfillment of God’s perfect plan.

What does walking by faith look like for you today? It might mean trusting God with an unanswered prayer, stepping forward in obedience despite uncertainty, or clinging to His promises even when doubt creeps in. “Faith is not about having all the answers—it’s about knowing the One who does,” Stephan said. The Israelites carried the bones of Joseph, but more importantly, they carried the promises of God. So do we.

Lord, help me to live by faith, not by sight. Give me the grace to trust Your promises and the courage to walk in them. Amen.
