Saturday, April 19’s devotional. “…who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:4b, CSB). This simple phrase captures the whole Christian life: a daily walk, not powered by our own strength, but animated by the Spirit who lives within us.
Mark Penrith draws the contrast sharply: “Not in the old way of flesh-driven religion. Not in the cycle of try, fail, condemn. But in the new way of the Spirit.” You don’t muscle your way into holiness. You don’t sprint toward sanctification by sheer will. “Sanctification is war,” Mark says, “but it’s war waged from victory, not for victory.”
The flesh still pulls. The old desires still whisper. But the decisive battle was already won at the cross. As Mark reminds us, “Now the Spirit applies that triumph—inch by inch, day by day—until every stronghold in your heart and flesh falls.” Your call isn’t to fight for freedom—it’s to walk in the freedom already purchased for you.
Walking according to the Spirit looks like steady, grace-fueled obedience. It looks like trusting when fear rages, forgiving when bitterness bites, and loving when hatred feels easier. “It looks like love when hatred seems easier. Joy when circumstances scream despair,” Mark says, painting a vivid picture of Spirit-powered life.
And when you stumble—and you will—the gospel still holds. Mark reassures: “And when you fail? Remember: The verdict doesn’t change. Your standing doesn’t shift. The Spirit doesn’t abandon you, He lifts you.” You don’t start back at zero. You get up, breathe in the air of freedom, and walk forward again.
You walk not to gain God’s love, but because you already have it. Not to earn the Spirit’s presence, but because He already dwells within you. This is life in Christ: a Spirit-led, Spirit-empowered, Spirit-kept journey.
So today, don’t sprint in panic. Don’t collapse in defeat. Walk. One step at a time. Trust the Spirit’s work in you. When you fall, remember: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, CSB). That verdict stands over every stumble and every stride.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, teach me to walk in Your power today. Lift me when I fall. Lead me in the paths of life and love, step by Spirit-filled step. Amen.
