Called to Community

27 May 2025

“…To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi…” (Philippians 1:1b, CSB)

Paul does not write to an individual. He writes to a community. “The letter is to those in Philippi, made holy in Christ Jesus, with the overseers and deacons.” From the outset, the message of Philippians is rooted in shared identity. Believers are not saved into isolation but into family.

Mark explains, “The church is to be comprised of those made pure.” That is what the word “saint” means—set apart, made holy. But this sainthood is not something we earn. “We are made positionally saintly by Christ’s atoning work on the cross.” That identity is “not earned. It is received.” And it is shared with others.

Paul’s choice of words points to this shared belonging. He writes “to all the saints,” not to a select few. He includes “the overseers and deacons,” but only after addressing the whole. Mark points out, “By including the overseers and deacons together with the congregation Paul highlights the communal identity of all as saints in Christ Jesus.” There is no hierarchy of worth. We all belong equally and wholly to Christ.

This matters deeply in a world where busyness can easily isolate. Many believers feel disconnected. But we must remember: “The shared identity of all believers is belonging to Christ.” Our faith was never meant to be private. It flourishes in fellowship.

That’s why gospel partnership matters. Mark highlights that in Philippians 1:3–7, “Paul gives thanks for their gospel partnership, and prays they might experience spiritual growth.” Their unity in Christ fuels their mission and maturity. So it is with us. “Their shared identity, as slaves of Christ Jesus…and as saints in Christ Jesus…is the basis for that gospel partnership.”

Take 60 seconds today to send a message to a fellow believer. Remind them they are not alone. You’re both saints—set apart together in Christ. Let your children see this kind of encouragement. Write a short note as a family and deliver it to someone in your church.

What keeps you from investing in community, and how can you take one step closer this week?

Prayer:
Father, thank You that I do not walk this journey alone. Help me encourage others as one set apart in Christ. Amen.
