A Life of Grace

“Grace to you…” (Philippians 1:2a, CSB)

Before Paul writes a single instruction, he speaks blessing. His first word after naming his audience is grace. That is no accident. As Mark says, “Paul desires them to be blessed with grace,” because grace is not an afterthought. It is the foundation of the Christian life.

Grace is more than a doctrine. It is a daily reality. Paul prays that believers would receive “that which they don’t deserve.” He means forgiveness, reconciliation, abundant life, eternal treasure, the Holy Spirit, and a place in heaven. That is grace. And it is for you today—not just on the day you first believed.

Grace is also the atmosphere in which we live. As Mark reminds us, “Grace…[is] in increasing measure.” It is not static or stingy. It flows freely from the heart of God. It is what allows us to stand, to grow, to forgive, and to begin again.

We often wake up already burdened by expectations. Meetings to attend. Children to manage. Temptations to resist. But we do not begin our day with performance. We begin with grace. Paul’s greeting is a reminder: our starting point is what God has done, not what we must do.

Mark roots this in the very nature of God: “Paul realises that blessings flow from God our Father.” Grace is not something we earn, it is something we receive. It is not found in effort, it is found in Christ. This is why Paul writes to saints in Philippi—and to you—saying simply, “Grace to you.”

Let that shape how you speak and act today. Speak with grace. Correct with grace. Work with grace. Parent with grace. Mark notes, “Discipline and grace can go hand-in-hand.” This is especially important in our homes. Our children are watching how we live out what we believe. Show them grace that is both firm and kind.

Before you open your to-do list, pause and pray: “Lord, help me live in your grace and extend it to others today.” Grace is not just how we begin the Christian life. It is how we live it.

Where do you most need to experience God’s grace today—and where do you need to show it?

Prayer:
Father, let Your grace shape my heart and my home today. Help me live in it, and give it freely. Amen.
