More Than a Greeting

31 May 2025

“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus: To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:1–2, CSB)

Paul’s greeting is more than formality. It is full of gospel power. Mark says, “Paul doesn’t start his letter with instruction or correction. He starts with identity.” These verses root the Philippians—and us—in who we are in Christ before saying what we must do.

We are “slaves of Christ Jesus.” That identity comes first. Paul, the apostle, chooses the term “slave.” As Mark notes, “The word doulos means slave, the meaning is so unequivocal, no study of history is necessary.” Paul does not flaunt status. He submits to Christ’s authority. “Slaves of Christ ask, ‘Lord, what do You want from me?’ They surrender their schedules, their spending, their speech, their lives to His authority.”

Then, Paul calls his readers “saints in Christ Jesus.” This is not a title earned but a status given. Mark explains, “We are made positionally saintly by Christ’s atoning work on the cross.” This is your identity—made holy, not by effort, but by grace. “Your righteousness is not your own. Your peace is not your own. It all flows from Jesus.”

And this grace shapes your community. Paul includes “the overseers and deacons,” not above the saints, but alongside them. As Mark puts it, “The shared identity of all believers is belonging to Christ.” Leadership is not about power, it is about service. And every believer has a place in the family of God.

Finally, Paul blesses them with “grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” These are not empty words. Mark reminds us that Paul “desires them to receive that which they don’t deserve… in increasing measure.” Grace and peace are gifts, not goals. They come from the Father, through the Son.

As you look back on this week, ask yourself: Is your life rooted in grace? Is it marked by peace? Is it shaped by your identity in Christ? Let your family share around the table: “What’s one way we can show we belong to Jesus this week?”

If your life were a letter like Paul’s, what would your opening lines say about who you are and how you live?

Prayer:
Lord, let my life speak clearly of who I am in Christ. May Your grace and peace shape all I say and do. Amen.
