The Math of Eternity

24 June 2025

“…not worth comparing with the glory…” (Romans 8:18, CSB)

Paul does not ask us to pretend suffering is light. He faced stoning, shipwrecks, and prison. His readers faced Nero’s cruelty. In Mark’s words, “Christians faced persecution. Real persecution. Brutal persecution. Deadly persecution. They lost their homes. They lost livelihoods. They lost their loved ones.” And still, Paul wrote, “The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.”

This isn’t a coping mechanism. It’s gospel math. Mark explained it this way: “Your worst suffering, your deepest grief, your longest night, is a fleeting sigh next to eternity’s symphony.” The comparison doesn’t hold because the scale is broken. Suffering is real. But glory is heavier. Glory is eternal. Paul uses the Greek word “ἀξία” (worth) and insists suffering doesn’t even measure up. Mark said, “Not partially. Not remotely. Not in any measure.”

This is not the voice of denial. This is the voice of defiant hope. Paul doesn’t downplay your pain. He just elevates your future. He tells you to stack your worst day next to resurrection glory and realize they’re not in the same category. Mark put it plainly: “This glory isn’t symbolic. It’s substantial. This is not a dream. This is a divine promise.”

If you are in Christ, you are not waiting for pain to pass. You are waiting for glory to arrive. Revelation 21 shouts what Romans 8 whispers: “He will wipe away every tear… Death will be no more… Behold, I am making all things new.” Your groans are not the end. They are the prelude. Mark reminded us, “Christ didn’t stay dead. His resurrection guarantees yours.”

So today, name your pressures. Then write this across them: GLORY. Let eternity weigh in. Let Christ’s victory overshadow your anxiety. Let your day be shaped by the end of the story.

Prayer:
Father, help me see my burdens through the lens of your promised glory. Teach me to number this pain against eternity. Amen.
