Pray Anyway

Saturday, July 5’s devotional.

Sometimes the deepest prayers are the ones we can’t articulate. When the pain is raw or the confusion is thick, words often fail. But that doesn’t mean prayer has failed. As Andre reminded us, “When you don’t know what to pray, when you can’t pray because of those inexpressible groanings, the Spirit prays for you.” Romans 8:26–27 gives us an anchor for such moments: “In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.”

The beauty of this promise is that it frees us from the pressure of eloquence. God doesn’t require polished sentences—He desires dependent hearts. That’s why Andre emphasized that “prayer isn’t about eloquence but about dependence.” Weakness isn’t a barrier to prayer; it’s the doorway. And in our weakness, when faith falters and speech stumbles, the Spirit steps in, aligning our brokenness with God’s perfect will. He takes the jumbled mumblings of our hearts and translates them into heaven’s language.

Andre told a powerful story of a woman who, in her cancer diagnosis, said, “Today I met with the Lord, and the best thing that’s ever happened to me is this cancer.” That’s not the result of strong human will—it’s the fruit of the Spirit’s work in suffering prayer. He helps us not only to endure but to see God’s glory in the groaning. “The Spirit himself intercedes for us,” Paul writes, and he does so “according to the will of God” (Romans 8:27). That means every tear, every sigh, every breathless plea is heard and held by the Father.

So don’t avoid prayer because you feel weak. Don’t run from it when you don’t know what to say. Show up. Sit quietly if you must. Weep if you must. But come—and trust the Spirit to carry what you cannot speak. As Andre said, “Be encouraged. No matter how feeble your prayer is, God is going to hear, accomplish His purpose, aid, assist, and answer.”

Prayer:
Father, thank You for not requiring perfect prayers from imperfect people. Thank You that the Spirit intercedes when I don’t know how to speak, and that my silence is never wasted in Your presence. Teach me to come honestly, to pray simply, and to trust deeply. Help me rest in Your strength when mine runs out. Carry my groanings to Your throne, and let Your will be done in my life. Amen.
