When Darkness Defines You

8 December 2025

Israel walked beneath a heavy sky. The sermon reminds us, “The Lord treated the northern tribes with contempt in former times, but in latter times He will honour Galilee.” The judgment was real. The weight pressed like stone. Yet even inside the darkness God planted a promise. He drew a line between what was and what would be. Isaiah writes, “In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honour Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan” (Isaiah 9:1 CSB). Mark Penrith showed us that the past held humiliation, shame, and loss, still the future held honour.

We are no strangers to contempt. The sermon said, “This was contempt. This was disgrace. This was shame.” Sometimes our failure becomes our identity. We wear regret like skin. Yet God does not leave His people buried beneath what they were. He speaks into the night. He calls dawn. He says, “But in the future he will honour Galilee of the nations.” Mark explained that this verse “establishes our need” and reveals that our darkness is not final. Darkness has a beginning. It also has an end.

Pause and consider where shame still shapes you. A moment you cannot forget. A weakness that whispers often. Mark said, “The hinge on which the Lord’s plan turns is grace.” We cling to that hinge. We bring sin, failure, disappointment, and defeat to the One who transforms contempt into honour. Scripture declares the truth. God Himself pivots the story. He is not finished.

Write down one place where shame still speaks loudly. Fold the page. Hold it. Then pray, Lord, lift this yoke and teach my heart to hope again. This small act mirrors the sermon’s reminder that “the Lord’s promises are greater than man’s failure.” The God who humbled Israel is the God who will honour His people again. Not because they repair themselves, but because He delights to restore.

Tonight, with your spouse if you are married, share one moment where God turned darkness to light. Recall the pivot. Remember the grace. Allow worship to rise like dawn. And then ask, where do you still long for honour to replace contempt?

Prayer:
Lord, shine light where darkness lingers. Speak honour where shame once ruled. Teach us to trust Your promise of transformation. Amen.
