Stand Firm or Do Not Stand

17 December 2025

God did not negotiate with Ahaz. He declared. “It will not happen; it will not occur” (Isaiah 7:7, CSB). The threat felt real, but the outcome was already settled. In the sermon, Mark Penrith reminded us, “God declares their end. And He anchors it in His own sovereignty.” Deliverance did not depend on Judah’s readiness or resolve. It depended on the Lord’s word. When God speaks, fear loses its authority.

Yet promise always comes with a summons. God exposed the limits of human power. Kings had names. Cities had borders. But all of it was temporary. Isaiah records the ultimatum, “If you do not stand firm in your faith, then you will not stand at all” (Isaiah 7:9, CSB). Mark pressed the weight of that sentence, “Your standing is contingent on your faith. Not your army. Not your alliance. Not your aqueduct.” There was no middle ground. Faith was not optional. It was foundational.

This is where pressure sharpens the issue for us. We want standing without trust. We want peace without surrender. But Scripture will not allow it. As Mark said, “The verb is the same. To stand. Your standing is contingent on your faith.” God was not calling Ahaz to bravery. He was calling him to belief. Standing firm meant resting on the word of the covenant God, not on visible supports.

That truth confronts modern discipleship. When work tightens, health falters, or parenting overwhelms, we instinctively reach for control. We tighten routines. We rehearse plans. We steady ourselves with what we can manage. Mark exposed the danger, “The foundation of all blessings. The condition for all standing. Faith in the covenant God.” Strategy cannot replace trust. Strength cannot substitute belief. Without faith, all other ground eventually shifts.

God’s word still offers the same firm place to stand. Write down one promise that speaks into your current pressure. Read it out loud. Let your heart hear it. Faith grows by hearing. Families can practice this together. Memorise a verse. Repeat it at the table or in the car. Children learn where security lies by what their parents cling to. As Mark said, “Stand firm on that. Or you will not stand at all.” The call is clear. The grace is real. The promise is sure.

What does standing firm in faith look like in your life right now?

Prayer: Lord, I confess how quickly I lean on myself. Teach me to stand on Your word today. Strengthen my faith where my heart feels weak. Amen.
