Paul speaks about his ministry with confidence, yet he refuses to take the credit. Scripture says, “Therefore I have reason to boast in Christ Jesus regarding what pertains to God. For I would not dare say anything except what Christ has accomplished through me by word and deed for the obedience of the Gentiles” (Romans 15:17–18). In his sermon, Mark Penrith explains Paul’s posture clearly. Mark Penrith says, “Paul boasts. But not in himself. He boasts in Christ Jesus.” The apostle understands that the success of gospel ministry never belongs to the messenger. It belongs to Christ.
Paul describes how Christ worked through him. The Lord used his preaching and his actions. The result was that Gentiles came to faith and obedience. Scripture continues, “by the power of miraculous signs and wonders, and by the power of God’s Spirit” (Romans 15:19). Mark explains the relationship between Christ and His servant. “Notice the grammar. Christ accomplished it. Through Paul.” The apostle served as the instrument, but Christ performed the work. The power came from the Spirit of God.
This truth protected Paul from pride. It also gave him courage. He knew that the results did not depend on his ability. Mark captures this beautifully. “Paul is the tool. Christ is the hand that wields him.” When believers remember this, they can serve faithfully without fear. God works through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
Many Christians feel pressure to produce spiritual results. We want the perfect words. We want the right moment. Yet Paul reminds us that God carries the weight of the work. Mark says, “The work is divine. The instrument is human.” Our responsibility is simple. We speak the truth. We live faithfully. God changes hearts.
As you begin your work today, pause for a moment of prayer. Ask the Lord to work through you. Pray, “Lord, accomplish Your work through me today.” Then look for one opportunity to reflect Christ’s character. Perhaps you show patience in a difficult conversation. Perhaps you offer encouragement to someone who is discouraged. Small moments of faithfulness matter when Christ works through them.
At home tonight, tell your children one way you saw God help you this week. Let them see that faith belongs in everyday life. Mark reminds us that “Christ accomplished it.” When your children hear stories of God’s help, they learn to trust Him too.
How does remembering that Christ accomplishes the work change the way you approach your responsibilities?
Lord, thank you that the work belongs to you. Help us serve faithfully today. Work through our words and actions so that others may see Christ and trust Him. Amen.
