Isaiah presents one of the most beautiful pictures of God’s character in all of Scripture. The God who measures the oceans in His hand and calls every star by name is also the Shepherd who tenderly cares for His people. Isaiah declares, “See, the Lord God comes with strength, and his power establishes his rule” before adding, “He protects his flock like a shepherd. He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them in the fold of his garment. He gently leads those that are nursing” (Isaiah 40:10-11, CSB). Andre reminds us to “stop looking at yourself and… look up and… behold your God.” The King who rules over all creation is also the Shepherd who lovingly holds His sheep.
This picture would have brought great comfort to Judah. They were weary exiles living far from home, wondering whether God had abandoned them. Instead of leaving them to despair, God assured them that His strength would be used for their good. A shepherd does not merely lead his flock from a distance. He walks among them. He protects them from danger. He carries the weak when they can no longer walk. The Lord wanted His people to know that although they were experiencing discipline, they had never fallen outside His loving care. His power and His compassion always work together.
Andre illustrates this truth through the moving account of an estranged father who embraced his son’s coffin and cried, “My son, my son.” He then reminds us of God’s heart by quoting Isaiah 49: “Can a woman forget the child that she is nursing?… Neither can I… forget you.” He concludes, “Your God is a God who is like a shepherd who cares for his children.” The gospel reveals that care most clearly in Jesus Christ. He is the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep. At the cross He bore our judgment, and through His resurrection He secured our salvation. Today He continues to lead, protect, and sustain every believer with perfect wisdom and unfailing love. No trial, failure, or season of weakness can separate His people from His faithful care.
What burden are you carrying today? Perhaps you feel overwhelmed by family responsibilities, anxious about the future, or exhausted by a long season of difficulty. Bring that burden to Christ instead of carrying it alone. The Shepherd who governs the universe also knows your name, understands your weakness, and walks beside you every step of the journey. You can trust His strength because it is joined to His compassion. Lift your eyes from your fears and rest in the arms of the Shepherd who will never let you go.
Gracious Father, thank You for being both the sovereign King and the tender Shepherd of Your people. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, who gave His life to rescue me and now faithfully watches over me. Forgive me for doubting Your care when life becomes difficult. Help me to trust Your strong hands and Your gentle heart. Teach me to place every burden into Your care and to rest in the assurance that You will never forget or forsake me. Amen.
