Thursday, January 16’s devotional. “Trust in the Lord, all you His people!” This call, drawn from Psalm 115:9-11, urges every believer to place their trust in God. During the sermon, Kgomotso reminded us, “The heart of man is an idol factory.” Indeed, we often place our trust in things of this world—money, relationships, possessions—seeking stability and satisfaction. Yet, Scripture warns us that such idols inevitably disappoint. Only God, who is in the heavens and does all He pleases (Psalm 115:3), is worthy of our trust.
The Psalm contrasts the living God with lifeless idols, highlighting the folly of trusting in man-made objects. This misplaced trust not only robs God of His due glory but also leaves us empty and unfulfilled. Trusting in God, however, aligns us with His purpose and brings true satisfaction. As Proverbs 3:5-6 declares, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
John Piper aptly notes, “If God were not infinitely devoted to the preservation, display, and enjoyment of His glory, we could have no hope of finding happiness in Him.” This perspective aligns with our understanding of God’s faithfulness and love, as stated in the Baptist principles of the Benoni Baptist Church: “The glory does not in any way belong to any of us or to anyone or to any created thing but to God and Him alone.” Recognizing this truth deepens our trust in God and detaches us from the transient nature of idols.
Charles Spurgeon once said, “When you cannot trace His hand, you can trust His heart.” This quote resonates deeply with our spiritual journey, reminding us that even when circumstances are unclear, God’s unwavering love and sovereign control guide us. Trusting God is not merely about seeking His blessings but about embracing His presence and authority in our lives.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that You alone are worthy of our trust. Forgive us for the times we have placed our faith in idols. Teach us to rely on Your unfailing love and guidance. Help us to live in a manner that reflects our trust in You, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
