The gospel does what our effort never could. We can try to clean up our lives, manage our behaviour, and hide our failures, but we cannot cleanse our own hearts. Paul says, “To the pure, everything is pure.” That purity does not come from our performance. Mark explains, “The only remedy is the gospel’s power to purify our lives and transform our hearts.” Christ does not simply improve us. He makes us new.
Hebrews 10:22 gives us a beautiful picture of what Christ has accomplished: “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.” We do not approach God hoping that our efforts will be enough. We come with confidence because Christ has cleansed us. Mark says, “The conscience is clean. The heart is new. The standing is secure.” Our acceptance with God rests on Christ, not on how well we performed yesterday.
God also promised to do something inside His people. In Ezekiel 36, He says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” This is the transforming work of God. He does not cleanse us and then leave us to change ourselves. He gives us His Spirit and works in us so that we can increasingly obey Him. Mark says, “The Spirit lives in you. The Spirit works through you. The Spirit empowers you.” That changes the way we fight sin. We do not fight for acceptance. We fight because we have been accepted in Christ.
So identify one sin you have been tolerating, excusing, or coddling. Confess it to God. Then take one concrete step to fight it today. Do not trust your own strength. Rest in Christ’s finished work and depend on the Spirit’s power. If you have children, let them see this process in your own life. Admit when you sin. Ask forgiveness. Tell them that you need God’s help to obey. Mark gives us the right perspective: “Fight sin. Not to earn approval. You already have it. Fight because the Spirit empowers you.” You are not pretending to be perfect. You are trusting the One who makes you clean. “You are pure in Christ. Now live pure for Christ.”

Prayer: Father, thank You for cleansing me through Christ. Help me rest in His finished work, depend on Your Spirit, and live faithfully for Christ. Amen.
