Fellowship with One Another – The Joy of Believers

Wednesday, March 5’s devotional. True joy flourishes in the company of believers. John writes, “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you may also have fellowship with us. And indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete” (1 John 1:3-4, CSB). The joy John speaks of is not an isolated experience but one rooted in fellowship with God and His people. It is a shared joy, made full in the communion of believers.

Fellowship in Christ is more than social interaction; it is the very expression of our faith lived out together. Robin emphasized that John’s letter is not about salvation but about what happens after salvation—about “the beautiful fellowship.” While our relationship with God is eternal and unbreakable, our fellowship with Him and with others can be affected by how we live. When we gather in worship, prayer, and service, we experience the depth of this joy. “Our joy is incomplete on our own,” Robin reminded us. True Christian joy is designed to be experienced together.

John’s words challenge us to evaluate our engagement with the body of Christ. Robin gave a striking illustration: “Imagine coming to church on Sunday and finding no one there. Yes, you could sing, pray, and worship on your own, but the joy would be incomplete.” Our individual faith matters, but it is through the local church that we are strengthened, encouraged, and refined. The Benoni Baptist Church Covenant affirms this, stating, “We seek to walk together in brotherly love and unity, expressing care, concern, and watchfulness over each other.” This is the essence of true fellowship.

How can you cultivate deeper fellowship today? Perhaps by reaching out to a fellow believer, joining a Bible study, or simply committing to being present in the life of the church. In a world that promotes isolation and self-sufficiency, the gospel calls us into community. The church is not just a gathering place; it is a spiritual home where our joy is made complete.

Father, thank You for the gift of fellowship. You have called us not to walk alone but to be part of the body of Christ. Help us to seek and cherish the joy that comes from being together in faith. May we encourage one another, love one another, and spur one another on toward holiness. Strengthen our bonds as we walk in the light, and may our joy be made full in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
