Multiplying Disciples

5 May 2025.

The early church didn’t grow because of clever strategies or programs. It grew because lives were transformed by the gospel. As Mark Penrith noted in his sermon, “This passage begins and ends with the disciples increasing in number.” The key to this growth? Obedience. “Becoming obedient to the faith means to surrender to Christ as Lord. Not just intellectual agreement, but a life transformed by the Gospel.”

In Acts 6:1a, we read, “In those days, as the disciples were increasing in number…” and by verse 7, “the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly in number.” The thread connecting these verses is obedience. Mark put it plainly: “Saving faith is a call to obedience. And saving faith produces obedience. And saving faith is evidenced by obedience.” True discipleship isn’t about adding names to a roster. It’s about hearts surrendered to Jesus.

This challenges us today. Is our faith merely intellectual, or does it shape our daily choices? Mark warned against empty growth: “Luke doesn’t care about numbers for numbers’ sake. But Luke does care about how many ransomed lives have become obedient to the faith.” The gospel advances when we live as Christ’s followers, not just fans.

Application: Ask yourself today: Is my faith evident in my priorities and actions? Look for one opportunity to share Christ’s love—whether at work, with a neighbor, or in your home. As Mark reminded us, “Legitimate church growth is about the multiplication of disciples to the church.”

Family Twist: At dinner, discuss: What’s one way our family can grow in obedience to Jesus this week? Maybe it’s serving a neighbor together or memorizing a verse about discipleship.

Question for Discussion: What distractions keep you from living out your faith boldly?

Prayer: Lord, make us disciples who obey You wholeheartedly. Multiply our faith as we surrender to Your Word. Amen.

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes. Read them for additional insight into the passage.
