Creation Groans With You

25 June 2025

“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now” (Romans 8:22, CSB).

Creation is not silent. It groans. It aches. It strains toward something more. Mark put it this way: “Creation groans together. There is a universal, collective agony. Like labor pains. Creation’s suffering isn’t random. It’s birth pangs.” That changes everything. The world’s brokenness is not meaningless. It is pregnant with purpose.

Paul’s words in verse 22 are not poetic exaggeration. They are grounded in reality. Wildfires, floods, famine, and even the frustrations of your morning commute all testify to the same truth. “The mess of this world shouts out, Your rebellion shattered everything!” Mark reminded us that creation’s groans are not chaos. “Earth itself is a megaphone amplifying hope.”

This groaning began in Genesis 3, when the ground was cursed because of Adam’s sin. “Thorns choked soil. Animals turned violent. The very soil itself rebelled against the farmer’s hand.” Yet even in the curse, God planted a promise. One day the seed of the woman would crush the serpent. That day has already begun. Jesus rose from dead ground. “Creation has had its first taste of freedom!”

Now, as you suffer, you’re not alone. Even “the dirt beneath your feet… is groaning for your resurrection.” The world is waiting with you. Longing for the day when “creation itself will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children” (Romans 8:21, CSB). The world does not merely echo your pain. It amplifies your hope.

So, when your kids are melting down, when the budget is tight, when you feel like everything is unraveling—pause. Breathe. Listen. That creaking floorboard, that rumbling sky, that restless ocean, all of it says, “Not yet… but soon.” As Mark said, “Creation isn’t just groaning with you. Creation is groaning for you.”

Prayer:
Lord, open my ears to creation’s groan and tune my heart to its hope. Let me join in its longing for your return. Amen.
