When Fear Shakes You

27 May 2026

Fear has a way of exposing us. It strips away confidence. It reveals what we trust. It shows where we run when the ground beneath us feels unsteady. Haggai gives us a sobering picture of a future Day. God says in Haggai 2:21–22, “I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms.” Mark Penrith captures the force of that moment when he says, “The text is not polite. It is not tame. Because the Lord of Armies is marching.” This is not a gentle picture. It is meant to wake us up.

That coming Day should shake us. Mark says, “The sky unravels. Thrones crash.” The Day of the Lord is not a minor interruption to history. It is history reaching its appointed conclusion. And if we are honest, there are moments when thoughts of judgment expose fears buried deep inside us. We know our failures. We know our sin. We know our weakness. The sermon speaks directly into that reality, “If something inside you trembles. Because you know you are not right with God. Good. It is a mercy of God intended to wake you up.” Fear can become a gift if it drives us toward Christ.

The gospel changes everything. Before Jesus comes as Divine Warrior, He came as the Lamb. Mark beautifully says, “The Warrior became the Lamb.” Before Christ returns to shake heaven and earth, He stood in the place of sinners and absorbed the judgment they deserved. The sermon says, “He took the shaking you deserve.” This is why Jesus could say in John 6:37, “Anyone who comes to me I will never cast out.” Fear no longer has to push us away from God. It can drive us toward Him.

Take five minutes today and thank Christ for specific sins He has forgiven. Do not stay general. Remember His mercy in detail. Remember pride. Harsh words. Impatience. Coldness of heart. Worship grows stronger when grace becomes personal. Mark reminds us, “Let the terror of Haggai drive you to the tenderness of Jesus.”

When fear rises in your heart, where do you instinctively run for refuge?

Prayer: Father, when fear shakes us, draw us quickly to Christ, our refuge and our peace. Amen.
