Tuesday, January 7’s devotional. The excitement of starting university life often brings new experiences and opportunities. For many, like Tolamo Mallane shared, it’s a time of independence, new friendships, and exploration. Yet, amid this enthusiasm, spiritual needs can be neglected. He recalls his father’s advice, “Make sure that you find yourself a good Bible-believing church to get connected to.” Unfortunately, he ignored this counsel, leading to a spiritual drought and a deep longing for fellowship with God’s people.
In 1 John 4:1, the apostle John warns believers, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” This caution emphasizes the necessity of discerning the teachings we encounter, especially within a church community. Tolamo’s experience of attending a service led by a false teacher underlines the importance of this biblical command. His realization of being in a place spreading false teachings resonates with John’s admonition to test every spirit.
Spiritual community is not just about attending church but being vigilant about the truth being taught. The Baptist principles of the Benoni Baptist Church stress that “the Church…is a community of believers in a particular place where the Word of God is preached and observed.” This commitment to sound doctrine is vital in safeguarding one’s faith against deception. Tolamo’s experience serves as a reminder to align ourselves with a church that holds firmly to biblical truth.
As Charles Spurgeon once said, “Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right.” This quote highlights the subtleties of false teachings and the critical need for discernment within the church community. Joining a local church not only nurtures one’s faith but also provides a space to grow in understanding and application of God’s Word.
Let us pray: Lord, we thank You for the gift of spiritual community and the church’s role in our growth. Help us to remain vigilant and discerning, testing every teaching against Your Word. May we seek fellowship with believers who encourage us to grow in faith and truth. Guide us to remain steadfast in Your teachings, protecting us from deception. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
