The Procedure to Test – Part 1

Friday, January 10’s devotional. The Apostle John provides us with a clear and critical method for discerning truth from falsehood in 1 John 4:2-3. He introduces the Christological test, which examines whether a teaching confesses that “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” (1 John 4:2). John emphasizes that any teaching that denies this truth is not from God but embodies the spirit of the Antichrist. This test is vital because it centers on the correct understanding of Jesus Christ’s incarnation—a cornerstone of Christian faith.

During a sermon, Tolamo shared a personal experience of encountering false teaching during a university church service. He described the disquiet he felt when hearing a message that deviated from biblical truth. This aligns with John’s warning that believers must “test the spirits to see if they are from God” (1 John 4:1), a practice necessary due to the prevalence of false prophets. This discernment is crucial for maintaining doctrinal purity and spiritual health.

John’s instruction is not merely about intellectual agreement but a deep, heart-level confession of the true nature of Jesus. As Tolamo highlighted, acknowledging Jesus Christ as fully God and fully man is non-negotiable. He warned that rejecting this truth, as some did through Gnostic beliefs, leads to heretical distortions of the Gospel. Such errors undermine the salvific work of Christ and the reality of His atoning death and resurrection.

The importance of sound doctrine is echoed by the words of Charles Spurgeon: “The proper study of a Christian is the Godhead.” Spurgeon urges believers to grow in their understanding of God, which in turn deepens their faith and guards them against false teaching. This aligns with Benoni Baptist Church’s principle that emphasizes the authority of Scripture and the need for continual growth in the knowledge of Christ.

Let us pray: Lord, we thank You for the truth revealed in Your Word. Help us to discern and hold fast to sound doctrine, recognizing the true nature of Jesus Christ as our Savior. Grant us wisdom and understanding, that we may faithfully test every teaching and remain steadfast in our faith. Protect us from falsehood and guide us by Your Spirit into all truth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
