The Nature of Worship

Monday, January 13’s devotional. “Not to us, LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory because of your faithful love, because of your truth” (Psalm 115:1, CSB). These words remind us that the essence of worship is recognizing the supremacy of God in all things. Kgomotso emphasized, “The glory that belongs to God is what the writer sees as the ultimate response to seeing that God is the only true God.” Our worship is founded on His steadfast love and faithfulness, which never waver, calling us to a life of praise and trust in His sovereign will.

The Psalmist boldly declares, “Our God is in heaven and does whatever he pleases” (Psalm 115:3, CSB). This statement asserts God’s complete sovereignty and control over the universe. Kgomotso highlighted that God’s ability to do whatever He pleases is a demonstration of His unique divine nature, saying, “All control is God’s meaning God is all Sovereign.” Our response to this truth should be one of humble trust, acknowledging that God’s plans are far beyond our understanding and always for our ultimate good.

In stark contrast, the idols of this world—whether material possessions, relationships, or personal achievements—fail to offer the security and satisfaction that only God can provide. Kgomotso pointed out, “The heart of man is an idol factory,” referencing John Piper’s assertion that our ultimate joy is found in God’s glory. It is a reminder to examine our lives and turn away from the idols that we so easily elevate, remembering that only God is worthy of our worship and trust.

John Calvin insightfully remarked, “Man’s nature, so to speak, is a perpetual factory of idols.” This reflects our constant tendency to place our trust in created things rather than the Creator. Yet, as the Benoni Baptist Church affirms, “The Church is responsible for preaching the Gospel and for demonstrating and making known God’s will and care for all mankind.” Our faith should be evident in our actions, leading others to the one true God.

Prayer:

Lord, we come before You, acknowledging that all glory belongs to You alone. Forgive us for the times we have placed our trust in idols instead of You. Help us to recognize Your steadfast love and faithfulness in every aspect of our lives. May we continually worship You with hearts full of gratitude and trust in Your sovereign will. Teach us to live in such a way that others see Your glory in us. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
