The Power of Justifying Faith

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Mark’s sermon notes below.

Friday, January 24’s devotional. Romans 4:5 presents a profound truth about God’s grace: “But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness.” Mark Penrith emphasized this in his sermon, saying, “God justifies the ungodly—not those who feel worthy, but those who recognize their need for Him.”

Many struggle with feelings of unworthiness, believing they must first “clean up their act” before approaching God. Mark addressed this misconception, stating, “The self-reliant person, the guilt-stricken sinner, and the complacent skeptic all share a common need: faith in Jesus Christ.” This truth is both humbling and freeing—our righteousness depends not on our efforts but on Christ’s finished work.

The Benoni Baptist Church covenant reflects this by calling believers to “live according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh.” This means resting in God’s grace and trusting in His promise to justify those who come to Him in faith. As the Baptist principle of “the direct lordship of Christ” affirms, Christ alone has the authority to save and transform us.

Today, reflect on the power of justifying faith. If you feel unworthy, remember that God justifies the ungodly—not based on your deeds but on His grace. Faith in Jesus brings forgiveness, righteousness, and the assurance of salvation.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for justifying us through faith, even when we feel unworthy. Help us trust in Your grace and live with the confidence that our righteousness comes from You alone. Amen.
