Tuesday, January 28’s devotional. Romans 4:16-17 reminds us, “This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants—not only to the one who is of the law but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all.” Mark Penrith highlights that Abraham’s faith was resolute, not because of his circumstances, but because it was firmly rooted in the unchanging character of God.
Mark explains, “Abraham believed in God. His Person. And Abraham took God at His Word.” Abraham’s faith was not theoretical but active. It rested on two truths about God: He is the One “who gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist” (Romans 4:17). This faith wasn’t blind optimism; it was anchored in God’s power and faithfulness.
Even when confronted with impossibilities, Abraham’s faith stood firm. Romans 4:18 says, “He believed, hoping against hope, so that he became the father of many nations according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be.” Mark notes, “Abraham hoped against hope that God Himself would get it done.” His faith didn’t depend on his ability to control the outcome but on God’s unwavering promise.
The steadfast faith of Abraham resonates with the commitment outlined in Benoni Baptist Church’s covenant: “Under the headship of Christ, we desire to be joined together with other like-minded believers in this local place, as an expression of the Church universal.” Abraham serves as a model of resolute faith for believers today, reminding us to trust God even when His promises seem impossible.
In moments of doubt, do you remember that God’s promises are grounded in His character? As Mark emphasizes, “God’s covenant with Abraham depended on God.” This same truth holds for us. Our faith grows as we meditate on His Word and His nature.
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where doubt overshadows trust in God’s promises? How can you remind yourself of His power and faithfulness today?
Application: Write down one promise of God, such as His faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23) or His provision (Philippians 4:19). Meditate on it throughout the day and ask God to strengthen your faith in His ability to fulfill it.
Prayer: Lord, like Abraham, help me to trust You even when circumstances seem impossible. Strengthen my faith and remind me of Your unchanging character. Amen.
