The Law is Holy, Just, and Good

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Mark’s sermon notes below.

Friday, March 28’s devotional. Romans 7:12 declares, “So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.” This verse dismantles any notion that God’s law is burdensome or unjust. Instead, it affirms that the law reflects God’s perfect holiness, revealing His righteousness and moral perfection. The law isn’t the problem; sin is the problem. The law is good because it comes from a good God.

God’s law is not a tool of oppression but a divine revelation of His character. It exposes sin, not to condemn without hope but to point us to the righteousness found in Christ. As Mark states, “When we look into the law, we see the holiness of God and our own shortcomings. That’s why we need grace.” The law is not an enemy; it is a mirror that shows us our need for a Savior. Paul’s words in Romans 7 counter the idea that the law causes sin. Rather, it defines sin and reveals its presence in our hearts.

Many struggle with the tension between law and grace, but Scripture presents them in perfect harmony. The law, though incapable of saving, leads us to Christ, who fulfills it on our behalf. “The law’s demands are met in Christ,” Mark reminds us, so that we may walk in the freedom of His righteousness. This truth should stir gratitude in every believer’s heart. We are not left to achieve righteousness on our own, but we are called to live in obedience as a response to the grace we have received.

Paul’s affirmation of the law’s goodness encourages us to align our lives with God’s standards. We should not view His commandments as outdated or irrelevant but as the perfect expression of His will. Do you delight in the law of God, as the psalmist did, or do you resist it? Your attitude toward the law reflects your heart’s posture toward God. The psalmist declared, “How I love your instruction! It is my meditation all day long” (Psalm 119:97). May we cultivate the same love for God’s commands.

Our response to God’s holy law should be one of praise and obedience. Instead of resisting His will, we should seek to walk in it with joy. “The law points to our need for Christ, and Christ empowers us to live righteously,” Mark says. This is the beauty of the gospel: what the law demands, Christ fulfills, and through Him, we are enabled to live in a way that pleases God.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your holy law that reveals Your righteousness. Help me to love Your commands and align my life with Your will. May I walk in obedience, not to earn Your favor, but as a response to Your grace. Amen.
