The Spirit Makes You His

12 June 2025

“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you…” (Romans 8:9, CSB).

This is not a motivational line. It is a gospel declaration. If the Spirit of God lives in you, you are no longer what you were. You no longer belong to the flesh. You belong to Christ. Mark Penrith explained, “So what will please God? What will lead to obedience? What will lead to peace with Him? Presence. Not performance. Not passion. Not pedigree. Presence.”

Paul doesn’t write this verse to question your salvation but to ground your identity. “You, however, are not in the flesh.” That’s a statement of gospel reality, not personal effort. Mark made this clear: “The turning point is not effort. The turning point is indwelling.” It is the presence of the Spirit—not the quality of your obedience—that defines your belonging.

Paul adds, “if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.” This is not meant to cause fear but to create clarity. “If the Spirit of God dwells in you, you belong to Him.” That is the bedrock of Christian assurance. Not a resume of achievements. Not a list of improvements. The indwelling Spirit is the evidence and guarantee.

But the opposite is also true. “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him” (Romans 8:9, CSB). Mark said it plainly: “Without the Spirit, we remain stuck. Sinful. Selfish. Separated.” It is possible to attend church, speak Christian words, and still not have Christ. Belonging is not earned by proximity. It is granted by presence.

So how do you begin your day? In fear or in faith? Mark challenged us to remember, “If Christ is in you, even though your body wastes away, the Spirit will grant you life. Because of righteousness. Not your righteousness. Christ’s righteousness.” Let that truth carry you through pressure, failure, and fatigue.

Read Romans 8:9 aloud in the morning. Let it anchor you in the middle of your frustration. Let it quiet your heart when insecurity rises. You belong to Christ because His Spirit lives in you.

Prayer:
Spirit of God, thank You that You live in me. Help me walk today in the confidence that I am Yours. Amen.
