God’s Love and Rejection Are Just

14 August 2025

Paul’s words strike hard in Romans 9:12–13. The older will serve the younger. As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau. Mark reminded us, “God’s love for Jacob and rejection of Esau are not random, nor are they unfair. They are rooted in His sovereign purpose.” Before birth. Before a deed was done. Before merit or failure. God chose. His love secures. His justice warns.

Jacob and Esau shared the same womb, the same father, the same heritage. Yet “God’s choice was uninfluenced, unprovoked, unconditional.” In the culture of the firstborn’s privilege, God crowned the younger. In the world’s economy, this makes no sense. But in God’s economy, “My choice needs no justification. My will requires no endorsement.” His love is not earned. His rejection is not cruel. It is His sovereign right as Creator and Judge.

Malachi’s words give the weight. I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau. Mark explained, “God’s love is a sovereign act, not sentiment. His rejection is judicial, not emotional.” This is not capricious mood. It is deliberate election. Acceptance and favour to one. Righteous judgment on the other. Jacob’s blessing was grace. Esau’s loss was justice. In both, God remains holy, righteous, and true.

For the believer, this truth steadies the soul. If God’s love for you is rooted in His sovereign purpose, it is unshakable. Heritage cannot earn it. Works cannot keep it. Failure cannot lose it. The same God who loved Jacob loves you in Christ. “Security flows from God’s choice, not your striving.” That is freedom to pursue holiness, not to earn favour, but because you already have it.

For the unbeliever, the warning is urgent. Esau had heritage. He had access to blessing. But he perished outside of God’s covenant love. “Firstborn status could not save him. Your baptismal font cannot save you. Your family pew cannot shield you.” The only refuge is Christ crucified and risen. His blood is the seal of God’s sovereign love for all who believe.

Lord, thank You that Your love is secure and Your justice is pure. Keep me humble under Your sovereign hand. Let my heart rest in Christ’s finished work, and move me to speak urgently to those still far from You. Amen.
