I wasn’t at church this past Sunday, Liezl and I went to visit Dunnottar Baptist Church. But Jason Harris sent me a photo of the congregation taken from the sound desk. We were packed. Speaking to Andre Broodryk, and Ian Bowie, and others, it’s clear that there were plenty of visitors. We have grown.
Growth comes with so many benefits. But it comes with some challenges too. On any given Sunday, half the faces may be new if you’re an older attendee. And all the faces may be new if you’re a newer attendee. Together with the elders and deacons, I’ve been thinking about how we can grow in unity. Unity is a very Biblical concept. Christ prayed in John 17 that His people would be one, so that the world may believe. Our unity is not decoration. Our unity is declaration. It is part of our gospel witness.
So we are being intentional. We are working towards unity. And I want you to work with us. How? This Saturday, 6 September, we will get together, older members, and newer members, for a day of fellowship. We are expecting a crowd, and I hope you us join too.
- The church will be open from 8:00am for those potjie’ing to get their fires started and pots bubbling.
- We’ll have place to sit both inside, and outside in the shade, to enjoy tea and cookies from 9:00am. There’s no cost, so come, enjoy the morning. And make some new friends.
- There will be a jumping castle and jungle gym for the kids all day. Fun, fun, fun.
- We’ll stream the Rugby (the Springboks against the All Blacks) at 9:05am. Green and gold supporters welcome.
- We’ll enjoy lunch together at 12:00. At least 7 potjie pots have committed, so there should be food for everyone. There’s no cost to you.
Unity is to be cultivated. And gospel unity is Christ’s desire for His people. Let us walk together. Let us worship together. Let us work together. One body. One family. One mission.
And so, I’m looking forward to seeing you, this Saturday, 6 September, at Benoni Baptist Church.
