When Everyone Leaves

Friday, September 5’s devotional.

Job pours out his heart: “He has removed my brothers from me. My acquaintances have abandoned me. My relatives stop coming by and my close friends have forgotten me. My house guests and my female servants regard me as a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight” (Job 19:13–15). His loneliness was complete—family, friends, and even servants turned away. The very people who should have drawn near in his suffering distanced themselves instead. Abandonment became a heavier burden than his sores or losses. When human companionship disappeared, Job’s cry turned heavenward.

Andre explained it like this: “My family, my friends, my relatives, those around me, they’re all gone and I am alone. What do you do when you get yourself into that position? Job does what we should do. Verse 21, he cries out to God, ‘Have mercy on me, my friends. Have mercy, for God’s hand has struck me.’” Loneliness drove Job to seek mercy not from people, but ultimately from God. The same cry belongs on our lips when isolation overwhelms us.

Even those closest to Job failed him. His wife offered no comfort, his servants ignored him, and even children mocked him. Andre reminded us that this forsakenness mirrors Christ’s own suffering: “Jesus comes down and what do his friends do? They forsake him. He’s innocent but they accuse. They go away but he suffers. And what does he do? He suffers in your place and he suffers in my place to set us free.” Job’s experience whispers of the cross, where Jesus bore abandonment so that we might never be truly forsaken.

Scripture promises, “Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). When friends fail, when family pulls away, when the crowd turns its back—God remains. Christ endured forsakenness so that every believer could know unshakable companionship. Loneliness may sting, but the Redeemer’s presence secures us.

Prayer:
Lord, You see the ache of abandonment and the weight of loneliness. When others walk away, remind me that You remain near. Teach me to cry out to You for mercy rather than sink into despair. Thank You that Jesus endured forsakenness on the cross so that I would never be abandoned. Anchor me in Your unfailing presence and help me to comfort others who feel alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
