Sunday prayer meeting notes

Prayer meeting

Welcome and Opening Scripture (5 minutes)

We gather tonight with a specific burden. A burden for our city. A burden for our leaders. A burden for our growth. Our desire is not for our own comfort. It is for the glory of Christ in this place. And so we come. We come to plead. We come to ask. We come to seek the face of our God.

1 Timothy 2:1-2, First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

Opening Prayer: We thank you, Father, for the privilege of prayer. We thank you for the blood of Christ that grants us access to your throne. We ask for your Spirit to guide our time. Give us your heart for your church. Give us your eyes for our city. We ask for your will to be done in us and through us. For your glory alone.

Prayer for Our Cities (8 minutes)

Isaiah 62:6, I have appointed watchmen on your walls; they will never be silent day or night.

We lift up the cities of Benoni, Boksburg, and Brakpan. We ask for a spiritual awakening. Not a shallow revival. Not a temporary fervour. We ask for a deep and lasting work of your Spirit. We pray our church would burn with a holy desire to see the lost saved. Is our heart cold? Is our passion weak? Lord, ignite us.

Pray for:

  • We pray for the preaching of the word in these places. That it would be clear. That it would be powerful. That it would be uncompromising.
  • We pray for every member. For courage to speak. For wisdom to answer. For love that compels.
  • We pray against the darkness of apathy, addiction, and false religion. We ask for the light of the gospel to pierce the gloom.

Prayer for Leader Development (8 minutes)

2 Timothy 2:2, What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

We pray for the raising up of men. Future elders. Future deacons. Future Bible study leaders. The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Lord of the harvest, send out labourers from among us.

Pray for:

  • We pray for men of proven character. Men above reproach. Self-controlled. Respectable. Hospitable.
  • We pray for men able to teach. Men who hold firm to the trustworthy word. Men who can give instruction in sound doctrine.
  • We pray for men who will lead. Who will protect. Who will shepherd your flock with diligence and zeal.

Prayer for Member Maturity (8 minutes)

Colossians 1:10, So that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.

We pray for the sanctification of your people. For growth in grace. For growth in knowledge. We ask for depth. Not a superficial faith. Not a nominal commitment. We ask for roots that run deep into the soil of your word.

Pray for:

  • We pray for integrity in the workplace. For patience in trial. For joy in sorrow.
  • We pray for husbands to love as Christ. For wives to respect as unto the Lord. For children to obey their parents.
  • We pray for a hunger for your word. For understanding that transforms. For doctrine that shapes our very being.

Open Prayer Time (8 minutes)

Hebrews 4:16, Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.

Is there a specific need the Lord has laid on your heart? A person. A situation. A point of struggle. Bring it before the throne of grace now. Pray with confidence. He hears.

Closing & Benediction (3 minutes)

2 Peter 3:18, Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.

Closing Prayer: Father, we have asked for great things. We ask not because we are great, but because you are. We ask for zeal for the lost. We ask for shepherds for the flock. We ask for growth in your people. Do it, Lord. For the sake of your great name.
