Because Jesus has all authority, He does not make a request. He issues a command. Matthew 28:19 records His words, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” In the sermon, Mark Penrith said, “This is not an invitation for volunteers. This is an instruction for subjects.” The risen King speaks with clarity and force. What follows is not optional for the church. It is central.
Jesus names the task. Make disciples. Mark pressed this home by saying, “Not make converts. Not make attendees. Make disciples.” A disciple is not a momentary decision but a lifelong allegiance. Scripture shows the scope of this command. Jesus says, “Make disciples of all nations.” This calling belongs to every believer, not only pastors or missionaries. Ordinary Christians carry an extraordinary responsibility because Christ Himself has spoken.
The command is worked out through ordinary faithfulness. Matthew 28:19–20 continues, “Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.” Mark explained, “Discipleship does not end in the water. It begins there.” Going, baptising, teaching. These are not dramatic acts. They are steady practices that shape lives over time. Faithfulness, not flair, drives disciple-making.
This matters for men with crowded lives. Work fills the calendar. Family fills the evenings. Energy runs thin. Yet the command remains. Mark said, “Your neighbour next door and the unreached tribe across the world. Both are mission field.” God has already placed people near you. A colleague. A neighbour. A family member. The task is not to go far, but to be faithful where you already are.
So act with intention. Name one person today. Pray for them by name. Ask God for courage and clarity. Take one small step toward a gospel conversation this week. Mark urged measurable obedience, saying, “This is not about vague intention. It is about measurable obedience.” Small steps taken in faith often open larger doors.
Do not overlook your home. Discipleship begins there. Open the Bible with your children, even if it feels rushed. Teach them that following Jesus shapes everyday life. As Mark said, “Your mission is to produce lifelong followers of King Jesus.” That mission starts closest to you.
Who has God placed near you that you could intentionally disciple?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You have commanded me to make disciples. Give me faithfulness and courage to obey You today. Help me to start where You have placed me. Amen.
