The Lord did more than speak encouragement. He acted. “The Lord roused the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people.” God Himself awakened them. As Mark Penrith explains, “a sleeper startled from slumber. A warrior awakened for battle.” The people did not stir themselves into spiritual energy. God supplied what they lacked.
This matters because obedience often exposes weakness. The work feels heavy. The demands feel constant. We know what we should do, yet we often feel tired, distracted, or spiritually dull. But God does not merely command from a distance. Mark says, “He supplies His power.” The same Lord who called the remnant to rebuild also “stirred leaders and people alike, so that the work begins.” His commands come with enabling grace.
And the result is visible. “They began work on the house of the Lord of Armies, their God.” The rubble started moving. The delay ended. Mark highlights the change, “twenty three days from excuse to obedience.” That is the mercy of God. He awakens sleeping hearts and puts His people back to work. Not perfectly. But genuinely. Faith begins to move. Service begins to happen. The people begin building again.
This same pattern continues for believers today. Mark reminds us, “the same Spirit who stirred the remnant dwells in you. Not provisionally. Permanently.” God has gifted His people for service in His church. Not for personal kingdoms. Not for private comfort. For His house. His people. His glory. So do not settle for vague intentions. Lock in one concrete act of service. Specific. Reachable. Real. Mark urges, “do not dream of the perfect work, and do nothing.” Pick up one stone and place it where it belongs.
Maybe that stone is teaching a child. Calling someone weary. Welcoming a visitor. Praying faithfully. Helping quietly behind the scenes. Small acts matter because God works through them. “The Spirit does not waste His provisions.” He equips His people for the work He has prepared.
Bring your family into this. Choose one simple way to serve together this week. Keep it small. Keep it faithful. God delights in steady obedience.
Question:
What is one “stone” God is calling you to pick up and place in His house this week?
Prayer:
Lord, stir my heart for Your work. Give me strength to serve faithfully, and joy in building what honours You. Amen.
