The Lord spoke directly into the discouragement of His people. “Be strong, Zerubbabel… Be strong, Joshua… Be strong, all you people of the land” (Haggai 2:4, CSB). Then came the command, “Work.” The people could not sit in despair beside the rubble. God called them to continue building. Mark Penrith says, “The command comes three times.” Not because the people were naturally courageous, but because they were weary and discouraged. God knew they needed strength from outside themselves.
Mark explains that this strength “means more than muscle. It is a stubborn refusal to quit trusting God.” That matters for believers living in busy seasons. Work deadlines stretch long. Children wake in the night. Bills need paying. Church responsibilities compete with exhaustion. Many men quietly wonder if they can keep going. Yet God does not call His people to impressive moments of occasional zeal. He calls them to daily faithfulness.
The Lord said, “Work! For I am with you” (Haggai 2:4, CSB). Mark describes this as “sweaty, manual labour. Calloused hands. Aching backs.” The work of obedience often feels ordinary. It rarely looks glamorous. Sometimes spiritual growth happens through simple perseverance. A father opens the Bible after a tiring day. A husband prays instead of withdrawing. A believer serves quietly without applause. These ordinary acts matter because God Himself stands among His people.
Mark reminds us that “the foundation of courage is not our strength. It is His nearness.” God pointed Israel back to the Exodus. “My Spirit is present among you, don’t be afraid” (Haggai 2:5, CSB). The same God who led His people through the wilderness remained with them in the rubble. And through Christ, He remains with believers today.
Perhaps there is some neglected area of obedience in your life. Prayer has become rushed. Scripture reading has faded. Family worship feels inconsistent. Restart small. Ten focused minutes in prayer before work. One intentional gospel conversation. One deliberate act of service in your home. Faithfulness grows through steady obedience.
Your children are watching more than you realise. They learn perseverance by observing ordinary routines of faith. “Faithfully fearless” fathers shape steady homes.
What work has God clearly placed in front of you right now?
Prayer: Father, strengthen me to keep building faithfully. Help me not to quit when obedience feels ordinary or exhausting. Remind me that You are with me. Amen.
