The Lord made a remarkable promise through Haggai. “I will provide peace in this place” (Haggai 2:9, CSB). To weary builders standing among plain stones and unfinished work, those words must have sounded extraordinary. Mark Penrith reminds us that this peace was “not a ceasefire. Not a truce. Wholeness.” The word is shalom. It speaks of peace between God and sinners. Full restoration. Complete reconciliation. The question remained, how would this peace come?
The temple itself could not provide it. Mark asks, “This temple had no ark. No mercy seat. How could it bring peace?” The answer unfolded centuries later. “The greater glory was a child.” Jesus Christ entered the temple not simply as another worshipper. He entered as the fulfilment of everything the temple pointed toward. Mark says, “The glory that filled Zerubbabel’s temple? Not a cloud. A Person.” God fulfilled His promise in flesh and blood.
Yet Christ came for more than presence. He came for peace. Mark writes, “He walked up Golgotha. Where He purchased the peace Haggai foretold.” Then he adds these words, “Not with gold from the nations. Not with silver from the treasury. With blood from His veins.” Christ secured peace through His death on the cross. He carried sin. He endured judgment. He reconciled sinners to God. The foundation of the Christian life does not rest on our effort or performance. It rests entirely upon Christ’s finished work.
That changes how believers live every day. Mark says, “Build fearlessly. For Christ is with you. And your future is secured.” Your standing with God does not rise and fall with yesterday’s failures or today’s discouragement. Christ has paid for your sin. Christ remains with you. Christ will finish what He started.
When guilt rises today, preach the gospel to yourself. Remind your heart of what Christ has already accomplished. Speak grace into your own soul. Return often to the cross.
And speak that same gospel in your home. Children need more than correction and instruction. They need to hear about grace. Mark says, “The promises are all fulfilled.” Let your home become a place where the peace of Christ is spoken often.
How does Christ’s finished work give you peace in the middle of ordinary life?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for purchasing peace through Your blood. Help me rest in Your finished work and live each day with confidence in Your grace. Amen.
