Many men live as though everything rests on their shoulders. Work responsibilities pile up. Bills need paying. Children need guidance. Pressures multiply. Quietly, we begin believing that everything depends on us. We carry burdens that leave us exhausted because we assume we must hold everything together. Yet Mark Penrith points us toward a different reality. Speaking of God’s promise to Zerubbabel, he explains that, “To be made the Lord’s signet ring is to be installed as His chosen king, bearing His own authority to rule on His behalf.” The signet ring represented ownership, authority, and security.
In the ancient world, a signet ring was no small accessory. It carried the authority of the king himself. Mark says, “The king’s identity. The king’s signature. The king’s power. And the king’s unbreakable decree.” Haggai 2:23 says, “I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant… and make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you.” This promise ultimately pointed beyond Zerubbabel. It pointed to Christ, God’s true and greater King.
And through Christ, believers receive astonishing assurance. Mark says, “He chooses. He saves. He seals.” Then he presses further, “Your salvation does not rest on the strength of your grip on Him. It rests on the strength of His grip on you.” Those words strike directly at our fears. We know our weaknesses. We know our inconsistencies. We know how often our hearts drift. Yet God does not secure us because our grip is strong. He secures us because His grip never weakens.
The apostle Paul says in Ephesians 1:13–14, “You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed. The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance.” God Himself has marked His people. He has placed His seal upon them. Mark reminds us, “The same God who took Zerubbabel from a cursed line and made him His signet ring has set His seal on you.” That truth changes anxious hearts.
When anxiety rises today, stop and pray, Lord, thank You that You are holding me even now. Remember this. The hand holding you does not slip. Mark says, “What He begins, He completes.”
What would change if you truly believed Christ was holding you securely?
Prayer: Father, calm our anxious hearts and help us rest in the strong grip of Christ today. Amen.
