“So you should welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints and assist her in whatever matter she may require your help.” Romans 16:2 shows us more than hospitality. It shows partnership. Mark Penrith highlights that Phoebe is not only received, she is supported. The church is called to come alongside her. This is how the gospel advances, through ordinary believers using what they have for the sake of others.
“Third, she is a benefactor. The Greek term is προστάτις.” Mark explains that this describes “a woman of means. Of influence. Who used her resources for the advancement of others.” Phoebe did not hoard what she had. She leveraged it. She saw her resources as tools for ministry. That perspective changes everything. Your time, your energy, your finances are not случай. They are entrusted to you by God.
“Phoebe uses her wealth for the advance of the gospel.” That line presses into your daily decisions. What you own is not ultimately yours. It belongs to the Lord. He calls you to steward it well. Not for comfort alone, but for mission. This includes your calendar. It includes your bank account. It includes your home. Every part of life can serve Christ’s purposes.
“Assist her in whatever matter she may require your help.” Mark notes that this refers to “the practical, everyday matters.” Gospel partnership is not abstract. It looks like meeting needs. It looks like giving generously. It looks like stepping in when help is required. Faithfulness often shows up in simple, tangible ways.
“This is how the body of Christ functions.” Each member contributes. Each person plays a part. As a father, you have an opportunity to model this. Let your children see generosity in action. Talk about why you give. Show them that supporting God’s work matters more than accumulating more for yourself.
“Welcome one another as brothers and sisters, for you are all in Christ.” That welcome includes sharing what you have. It is not just words. It is sacrifice. It is intentional. So take a moment today. Look at your schedule. Look at your budget. Ask where you can redirect something toward the gospel.
Are your resources primarily serving your comfort or Christ’s mission?
Lord, everything I have comes from You. Help me to use it for Your glory and for the good of Your people. Teach me to be generous and faithful. Amen.
