The Test of Time

15 May 2025

In 1 Timothy 3:10, Paul writes, “They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve.” These words remind us that God’s preparation for service is not rushed. It is a process, often marked by seasons of testing and refinement. As Mark Penrith emphasized in his sermon, “Deacons need to understand what they believe and they need to hold fast to it.” This holding fast is not a momentary act but a steadfast commitment proven over time.

The call to serve in the church is not based on mere enthusiasm or fleeting zeal. Mark pointed out, “You can’t have somebody join the church and then in week three because they’re full of zeal assign them the role of servant of the church.” True service requires a foundation of tested faithfulness. Just as gold is refined by fire, our character is shaped through trials. These trials are not meant to break us but to build us into vessels fit for God’s work.

Reflect on a past challenge in your life. How did God use it to shape you? Perhaps it was a season of waiting, a difficult relationship, or a personal failure. Mark reminded us, “Their lives might not be perfect, but they must have the ability to say to the congregation, ‘Follow me as I follow him.’” Our trials are not wasted when they draw us closer to Christ and equip us to lead others.

For families, this truth becomes a tangible lesson. Share a story of patience with your children, like learning to ride a bike. The falls and frustrations were part of the process, just as our spiritual growth often involves stumbling and getting back up. Mark’s words echo here: “They must be tested first and then if they prove blameless, then they must serve.” God’s timing is perfect, even when it feels slow.

What current challenge might God be using to refine you? It could be a difficult circumstance, a recurring temptation, or a call to serve in an area where you feel inadequate. Remember, “Those who serve well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 3:13). God’s testing is not to disqualify you but to prepare you for greater faithfulness.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the trials that shape us. Help us to trust Your timing and remain faithful, knowing You are preparing us for Your purposes. Amen.
