Gospel-Centered Homes

16 May 2025

In 1 Timothy 3:12, Paul writes, “Deacons must be husbands of one wife, managing their children and households well.” This verse reminds us that our homes are not just private spaces but living testimonies of God’s grace. As Mark Penrith emphasized in his sermon, “How can you manage the church of God if you can’t even take care of your family at home?” Our families are our first ministry, and a well-ordered home reflects the transformative power of the gospel.

The call to serve in the church begins with faithfulness at home. Mark pointed out, “Those whom we appoint to the role of deacons should be one-woman men, completely devoted to their own spouse.” This devotion is not merely about marital status but about a heart fully committed to God’s design for family. It’s a call to integrity, where our private lives align with our public witness. Just as deacons are tested for blamelessness, our homes become proving grounds for our faithfulness.

Consider your own household. Does it reflect Christ’s love and order? Mark’s words challenge us: “Get your house in order first, and when your house is in order, come and serve the household of God.” This week, take a small step toward building a gospel-centered home. Plan a 10-minute family devotional—read a Psalm, pray together, or discuss how your family can serve others. As Mark noted, “Our service reflects something of the humility of Jesus Christ.” Even simple acts, like children setting the table, can become opportunities to teach servant-heartedness.

For those without children or living alone, this principle still applies. Your “household” may be roommates, neighbors, or even your personal space. The question remains: How can your life and relationships better reflect Christ’s love? Mark reminded us, “Our lives become living testimonies of the transformation which [Christ] has done in our souls.” Whether in family or community, our homes are meant to display the gospel’s truth.

What practical change can you make today to align your home with God’s purposes? Perhaps it’s prioritizing time together, resolving a conflict, or opening your doors to others. Remember, “Our blamelessness as we serve points not to our excellence but to the perfections of Jesus Christ.” Let your home be a place where His grace is visible and His love is tangible.

Prayer: Lord, help us to order our homes according to Your wisdom. May our families reflect Your love and grace, becoming beacons of the gospel in a broken world. Amen.
