Mercy Multiplied

Thursday 16 October 2025

Paul writes, “As you once disobeyed God but now have received mercy through their disobedience, so they too have now disobeyed, resulting in mercy to you, so that they also may now receive mercy. For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may have mercy on all” (Romans 11:30–32). Mark calls this “the divine engine of mercy.” It moves history forward and unites all people under one banner—grace. Every human heart, whether Jewish or Gentile, stands guilty. Yet God’s response is not wrath first, but mercy.

Mark explains, “You have disobeyed. You are in the prison of your sin. But God’s character is clearer. He is a God who shows mercy.” None escape the reality of sin, but none are beyond the reach of grace. God’s mercy is the great equalizer. He binds all under disobedience so that none may boast. Salvation becomes a miracle of mercy, not a medal of merit. What we could not earn, God freely gives through Jesus Christ, the Deliverer from Zion.

“This mercy is no theory,” Mark continues, “it is a triumph.” Mercy conquered where law could not. Mercy opened the door when rebellion shut it. Mercy stands ready, offering life to the unworthy. Every breath we take is an echo of this grace. Every moment of repentance is proof that God still draws sinners home. To those who think they have fallen too far, Paul declares that “where sin multiplied, grace multiplied even more” (Romans 5:20).

Mark pleads, “You cannot save yourself. Not by effort. Not by performance. Not by perfection. But you can cry out to the one who shows mercy.” The gospel calls us to humility, not pride. To gratitude, not entitlement. To compassion, not condemnation. When we have been shown such mercy, how can we withhold it from others? Today, in your home or workplace, show mercy where you have been wronged. Extend grace where anger once ruled. For the mercy that saved you is meant to flow through you.

God of grace, thank You that You have shown mercy to me, a sinner. Help me extend that same mercy to those around me. May my home and workplace reflect Your kindness and compassion. Amen.
