When Submission is Faith, Not Weakness

2 December 2025

Paul speaks directly to the issue of rebellion. He writes, “So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves” (Romans 13:2 CSB). Mark Penrith said, “God puts all rulers in place, so if you rebel against them, you are rebelling against Him, and he will punish you for it.” Rebellion is not just a political problem. “Rebellion is not political. Rebellion is theological.” When we resist authority, we resist the God who appoints it. We must see that submission reveals faith in God and rebellion reveals unbelief. Submission is not weakness. It is trust.

This truth confronts the pride in every heart. Mark reminded us, “To fight God’s ruler is to fight God who placed him there.” Obedience to authority is not blind loyalty. It is clear recognition of God’s sovereign hand. It is obedience unto Him. Scripture says, “Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God” (Romans 13:1 CSB). This truth pierces through our excuses. We often claim we are resisting injustice. But many times we are resisting God Himself. When we disobey legitimate authority, we place ourselves in danger. “God’s wrath is a fearful thing. And He will not be mocked.” This is a warning we must not ignore.

Mark said, “All authority is from God.” We submit because we believe that God is sovereign. We submit because He is wise and in control. Even in a broken government. Even when we do not agree. Submission is an act of worship. It is a confession that God rules over rulers. It is a declaration that we trust Him, not the system. Scripture says, “Do what is good, and you will have its approval” (Romans 13:3 CSB). We obey Christ by obeying rightful authority. We do not submit because the ruler deserves it. We submit because God deserves it.

This is not easy for adults. It is not easy for children. Mark said, “God is in charge of our rulers. And so our submission to them is an act of trust in His sovereignty.” Teach your children that respect and obedience are part of worship. They mirror faith in a God who rules.

Prayer: Lord, give me a humble heart. Remove my pride. Help me obey authority as an act of faith in You. Teach me to trust Your sovereign hand. Amen.
